I have a '97 c280 5spd auto. Recently suffering from intermittent vibration during 5th gear cruise, appears to be independent of engine speed (i.e. frequency does not change if you change into fourth). It feels a bit like driving on a washboard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the driveshaft U joints.

ck the sound insulation above the transmission. it sometimes can sag and touch the ft flex disc causing a vibration noise.
