REMOTE KEY REPLACEMENT -need advice/help
Hi,
I have a 1998 Mercedes C230 and I am looking to replace my key. The plastic broke on "lock" button. Is there anyway you guys can help me or give me any advice?
Thank you in advance,

The company in the thread below upped the price to $114 last I heard due to everyone flooding them with requests to buy. That is still cheaper than most dealers.

Thank you both for replying...swapping the innards sounds much cheaper but the other price isnt bad at all either
how do you swap the innards? I was thinking about doing it, but wasnt sure how to do it so I didn't want to touch anything....too scared I might break it even more
I did see the plastic pre-owned keys on Ebay though

be aware that there are 3 generations of Smartkey. gen1 wont fit into gen2
housing...so try to stick with same housing (note PANIC button on gen2).

be aware it was made for gen2 Smartkey so the post is approx .25" off. still
it's not bad as I had purchased two for $20 last Summer and the fit's within

They request that I send them a copy of my DL and a copy of Registration and/or Title.
How safe do you think is that?

the new chrome smart key is now the replacement for all newer smart keys...(the ones that have the panic button) the new chrome smart key also requires replacement of the blade mechanical key, since the blades dont interchange

Could anyone tell me when Mercedes (i.e. what year) changed the design of these smart keys?
I know that the gen I key was discontinued in either 2001 or 2002. How about the chrome keys? I've seen them on some late AMG models CL55, S55, etc. But is it available on other models as well?
Thanks.

a gen 1 key can be updated to the newest version key, you have to get the blade and remote together,
having a blade key isnt all that bad when the remote itself malfunctions
