Unhappy removing spark plugs wires from spark plugs

Well, I tried to remove the spark plug wires from my wife's '89 300 SE so I could remove and check the plugs, right?

Wrong! No amount of moderate pulling on the wire cap on the plugs would remove them. On closer inspection, I see a metal clip at the base of the cap that surrounds it. It looks like its in two parts, linked together.

I've never seen anything like this on other cars - just pull the wire cap off and access the plugs. But not MBZ!

What gives? Do I need a special tool to remove the clip and then the cap?

Are the plugs torqued? If so, what's shold they be torqued to?

New to the Mercedes world!

You can go to Autozone to buy a spark plug boot tool for about $7 or 8. Then grab the boot with the tool and twist left and right a bit, then pull. Pull hard and you will hear a nice pop.

Those particular spark plug boots are always difficult to remove, I dont
know how many I damaged when I use to work on them. What I used to
use is side cutter pliers and pull where the two halves of the heat shield meet.
