Engine Tremor/timing issue

My 1996 S500 sedan V8 has developed a tremor/timing problem during periods of increased torque in the 1000-1500 RPM driving. There is almost a pulse-like fluxuation of the RPM (slight, but enough to be felt) which is slower (2-3 times per second) at idle, and grows to a shimmy like speed at 1400RPM. I noticed it gets worse in warmer/hotter temps (especially above 80-degrees F and living in Dallas, TX this is a big issue!). Adding Red Line Fuel Treatment to my premium fuel also helps smooth it a bit.

The dealer said it sounds like a timing issue (MAF sensor?) but before spending $$$$$$ with them I'd like to see if there is a likely problem I can use alldataDIY to fix myself.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Rob

Could also be an injector issue, remember the car is over 10 yrs old. One injector that sticks occassionally could cause that. I would lean to that area rather than the MAF.

Thanks - I actually was checking out the injectors yesterday - I did the math and the vibrations come out to once per cylinder firing... and I used to get a misfiring error code for cylinder #1... hmmm... your reply seems to confirm this.
