A/C Compressors blowing

I wonder if this is something really odd or possibly something that happens often. I had to replace the AC compressor in my old 96 C280 at about 65k miles (there went $1k) and in my 99 E430 (just shy of 49k miles). Also replaced one in a 97 C280 at about 55k miles.

Any ideas as to why this keeps happening? Is there a design flaw? These cars are in Cleveland area so its not like they are overworking the AC 12 months of the year.

The dealer said that it was very rare. His immediate phone diagnosis on 2 of them was the evaporator switch since those go out often. After #3 he just said... "yeah, that is strange."

Thanks
