w124 fault code reader

I have a 1990 300CE-24. When looking at the DIY fault code reader instructions i found on MBworld, i see it says insert black plug into pin 1, red into 16, and the third color into whatever you want to check.

My problem: My 16 pin is empty!

Any ideas? I DO have contacts in #'s: 1,3,6,7,8,14.
All other numbers are empty.

Seeing how #16 is supposidly power, i tried connecting it to the battery, then checking 8 and 14, but there were no flashes from the LED. By the way, what does 3,6,7 check?

Thanks,
Michael

Fyi

For any others with my problem.

I found on that link i just posted that there was another link to using a code reader. Under the connection part of it, it says the 16 pin is empty in some models and to just use the + battery for power instead.

Do any of the tech's here or even other members have a good link, or list they could post for fault codes in the w124? I'm getting conflicting information for the fault codes i have.
