Angry Vibration when gas is depressed...any ideas?

I was hoping some of you knowledgeable forum members could help. I own a 2001 e320. My problem occurs at all different speeds, but mainly at above 70 mph. As I depress the gas slightly the car shutters and will maintain this shuttering/vibration for 5-10 secs and then become smoother. If I go over 80mph the car will shake when I let off the gas and am gradually slowing down. I have been reading and have a few possibilities: motor mount, transmission mount, possible out of round/unbalanced tires...etc.

I have ruled out tires for the most part because the car would shake almost all the time, not only when I slightly depress the gas at higher speeds. The motor mounts are a possibility, but if that was the problem wouldnt it also vibrate when idling??!! Any suggestions would be welcome. Just dont want to pay a dealer hundreds of dollars to diagnose problem, but realize it may be the only option. Thanks guys!

Enterprise rent-a-car!!!
I'm sure this sounds silly, but are you sure the transmission is not slipping.
trans mount can be felt more than just on accel, and motor mounts are generally felt at lower speeds. To test the trans down shift with the selector and see of the feeling goes away. Trans mounts and drive line bearings can be felt in the seat of you pants. Are there any noises associated with the vibration??
A little more info please.
Thanks

I appreciate the ideas and have decided it is indeed the motor mounts. I revved the engine while stomping on the gas and engaging the emergency brake and the driver side lifted almost two inches. I ordered a new part and will attempt the repair myself. I will be taking full pictures as i go.

You said you have ordered a part. Should take several. I would change all motor and trans mounts. This is a tough one to do yourself as it takes some equipment that most people do not have, ie: lift, trans jack, engine hoist, etc. Doing it without the proper stuff could cause some damage and injury.

Could be a plug misfire. If you have weak spark to 1 cyl. it will do as you listed. I had a Lincoln burn a plugwire and sounded much like yours.

Ok, for those who say 2 plugs/cyl. It still could be misfire. Jim

Driveshaft center bearing could be worn, this will cause vibration.
