1. crystal
2. RF front end decoder chip: this is a custom chip that takes the signal direct from the antenna and does IF filtering as well as decoding and then supplies a serial data output for the microcontroller
3. NEC 8 bit microcontroller 78K0s series: this is the actual controller chip, actually a 'secure' version of the standard microcontroller. this holds the code that controls the code hopping algorithm as well as the individual ID codes for each transmitter.

Hey thanks Rob. :-)

Curious - what's the crystal for?

Best regards,
Tom

the crystal acts as the system clock for both the microcontroller and to provide oscillator reference to the RF chip: it provides a base frequency upon which it can create other frequencies to lock onto the RF data carrier.

Do you happen to know what this chip does or the part number?

Thanks to dark knight who sent me the part, my key now works. It looks like the IR emitter was missing on my remote. dark knight is a stand up guy, very legit!!!
