ESP is off off?

On the 07 ML63 when I turn off the ESP it is still big time in play. Very noticible in the rain and the cold. So I'm sure off is just towned down. On the 05 SL I am wondering if it is the same. Will the ESP cut in on the SL even when off?

I would not turn it off, great safety factor. However on my corvette to turn it off if the car is moving and you turn it off only active handling is turned off. To turn off traction control and active handling the car must be at a full stop. So my suggestion is to insure you are full stop. I would also check the owners manual,, gear selection might also be a factor. But why turn it off. I was driving on 2 lane rain soaked highway 4 AM and started to pass a car doing 30 mph. When I stepped on the gas the vet had so much power the rear broke loose. The computer took over and in microseconds the car straightened up and passed. If the computer were off I would have been in a ditch. However if you are on the drag strip you might want it off.

Only way to completely turn it off is to put the car in dyno mode. It's not wise to drive around like that for long, but if you want to see what the car feels like without any electronic interference, and you're in an absolutely safe situation, it's an interesting experience.

On the ML the ESP can be turned "Down" with the button. It seems to be still active enough to keep the car safe. But of course it is all wheel drive. I was wondering if the SL is the same- never off, just down. Of course even turned down in the SL it would be very easy to power oversteer dramatically in the dry, never mind the wet. I was hoping someone could tell me how active ESP is when turned "down". Would it be fair to assume that the smoke filled burnouts posted on the internet are when in dyno mode? I haven't got a trank that is easily accessible and don't want to be totally stupid on the road experimenting!

ESP stays partially on on all MB's except for dyno mode, except I think the CLK63 Black Series. With ESP off (turned down) you can get wheelspin with the supercharged and turbocharged models, although you can do it more easily in dyno mode.

I don't know about the 63.

Like whoover said, it needs to be put into 'dyno test' mode to completely turn it off. There is a procedure you can do through the instrument cluster to turn it off.
