2001 320E 4 matic steering noise
Has anyone experienced noise in the steering shaft of a 2001 320E 4 matic.
The car was purchased new and has been serviced several times for this problem. The noise is inconsistent and happens at random
Initially the service people responded with surprise at a muffled noise of this type, then said that it was peculiar to the 4 matics. So did all the 2001 4 matics have a steering shaft noise?
Presently, we are told a test car has had a metal piece installed but that the test car needs to run for awhile to see if that works. If you have had a similar experience and the problem has been addressed, please let us hear. thanks.

I have heard of a 320 4 matic with that problem as well. Last I heard was that mercedes has an updated steering column boot for this issue. Cant tell you if it takes care of the problem though. What have they tried on yours?

Initially disassembling the column and then re-assembling. The next time a deflector was installed. Currently, we are told a test car in Colorado has the same noise and Mercedes has installed something to the shaft as a 'test" but is waiting to see if it works. 11/11/02

4M Steering Noise
I've got a steering noise as well on my 2002 E320 4m. It seems as if it is coming from the steering column, but is more of a moaning noise, almost like a slipping belt. I've had it in to the dealer twice. First time they lubricated a gasket. Second time they performed a high pressure hose modification. The noise is still there.
