Is it worth it to learn?
As a pround new owner of a SL500 whose warranty just expired, I am wondering whether it will be worth it to learn to fix the car.
In terms of working on cars, I have 0 experience. But my old man was a radar engineer, and I am a very good bicycle mechanic, so I have a couple of right genes.
I suspect most people rely on dealerships as these cars are very complex creatures and equipment requirements may be high, but does any self-taught mechanic have any success stories to share?
If doable, what do I need?

+1 If you can follow directions and have the tools you can do it. However, with little/no experience you will have many 'learning experiences' so be ready for some failure. Also, anything requiring Star Diag will be beyond your capability.

Also, it's always worth it even if you never do it yourself because you then know what the professional mechanic is going to do and it's always better to be informed.
