Purge Valve?

I had a bad purge valve replaced for a mere $400. What is it, and how badly did I get hosed?

Question

Can you closer discribe whether this purge valve was part of the transmission? If so the $400 sound right since there is quite some labor and material such as transmission fluid involved.

Or what was it if not transmission?

I thought it was part of the emissions system, but I'm not quite sure. It only took them about an hour to replace it.

Purge valve is emissions , vac. operated valve between the charcoal canistor and the intake manifold. It is signaled by the ECU with short pulses so as not to affect the idle/intake vac supply.
The common problem is they get dirty and require cleaning or replacement .
About $80,
I just squirt some WD 40 in the hose and re-hook them up. That usually clears them.

They can be tested by simply holding in your hand and feel for a pulse/beat vibration [ oscillations of 4-9 p/sec. ]
