Ocassionally peeking under your seats pays off...

While vaccuming the interior of my car, I pulled out my passenger side floormat and took a peek under the seat, when low and behold, I find a plastic bag with a brand spankin' new Smart key in it. The bag had a label dated 2/11/02, so I guess it's been hangin' out under there till today. My question is; Is it possible to have my find reprogramed for my car or is it only good for the batteries inside? It appears the key was a lost replacement for another customer and I'm sure whoever inadvertantly left it, has replaced it.

If it is not for your car you cannot do anything with it (or you should find the owner of the car from which the key is).
Are you sure it is not for your car?

bring your car and all your smartkeys (including the spare) plus your find to the dealer. They will reset your system or whatever's needed. the same process has to be done in case you lose a smartkey. bring all the remaining ones and they will reprogram your car.. basically whichever key that isnt present will no longer be accepted.

i dunno about the mechanical key though.. is it blank?

sorry, let me rephrase,

they SHOULD be able to reprogram your car (your ignition system, whateveR), to accept whatever set of ELECTRONIC keys you bring in. since the smartkey is an electronic system, they should be able to reprogram it.

as for the mechanical key (for the doors), I have no idea. if it's a blank key, then they may be able to get it cut for you.

it's the same process if you lose one of your smartkeys. just bring your remaining keys to the dealership, and they will "delete" the missing smartkey from the car's list of authorized keys (okay, my terminology is shot, i know, but what the hell)

Brian, it can't hurt to take it to the dealership and ask them to set up your find to work on your car.

..............I think you are wrong. I purchased a key on ebay and took it to my dealer for have it programed for my car. I was told that that was not possible. So I lost the 80 bucks I spent on the key and had to order one from the dealer for 250 bucks. I recognoze that Mb dealers don't always know what they are talking about. So lets see what happens with Brian Yee.

Okay. Here's the scoop... They can send it to Indiana (? from what I can recall from the conversation) to have it reprogramed. As the shop foreman is a good buddy, he did disclose that it is somewhat a pain to expedite and is not on the menu of "official" services provided to customers. Reason being most customers have LOST keys replaced, rather than FIND them to have reprogrammed to their respective vehicles. The point is unofficially, it CAN be done... As to wether or not your dealer would do it or even acknowledge the possibility, YMMV.

Well, the cars and the keys can be reprogrammed. A friend bought a used S500 and only received one key in the deal. He went to the dealer, ordered a new smart key and had the car and keys reprogrammed. The dealer even said its something everyone should do after buying a used Benz. And they did it in an afternoon... Maybe you need special tools/computers to do this? He went to Mercedez of Manhattan which is a factory store.

So Brian Yee, did the Bay Area dealer send your key to Indiana and get it reprogrammed for you.

I have a key that I bought off eBay that I would love to get reprogrammed... (assumming it costs less than a new key!)
