wheel wear question

I was driving tonight and all of a sudden the ESP light came on and the COMAND sys. displayed ESP MALFUNCTION VISIT WORKSHOP and also RUN FLAT INDICATOR UNAVAILABLE.My question is can really worn tires cause the ESP to malfunction?

Thanks for any help.

I assume it was the IC instead of Comand giving the warning?

If the tyres are reasonably evenly worn, it should not matter how much wear they have had, should not trigger ESP malfunctions. Not sure if you could get this warning from one tyre that was at the other extreme from the rest, but this could cause some ESP/RDW malfunctions.

I assume it is a sensor issue, not necessarily a broken sensor but in addition to that, it could be some rust and other crap at the sensor wheel teeth, or a connector plug issue. Reading codes would help.

Yes the IC not COMAND. The tires are not evenly worn though. Left side still has tread left, while the right is almost down to the belt. Love the balancing job the dealer did on the tires. Oh well, I guess its off to the dealer for my dad.

thanks for the help Diesel.

NOTHING about these warnings is related to tire wear.

Runflat is unavailable because it's not installed on your car.

03 E500 and Corvette
Sounds like the battery in the transducer mounted in the wheel that measures the pressure and sends an rf signal to the onboard computer has failed. This could be the reason. You might just need a new sensor in the wheel. On my corvette they cost about $120 each. Installation is a POC for a corvette.

My dad put new tires on the car this morning and as Ikchris said the ESP error was still there. While the technician was putting on the back tire he noticed that he could shake it after he had tightened the lug nuts up. This is the same tire that was smashed in when my mom was in an accident. Seems the Merc dealer didnt fix something correctly. Oh well, the car is going in tomarrow for service anyway. Thanks for the help guys.
