Question W126 300 crankshaft ignition sensor

I've got one of those difficult to pin down intermittent ignition faults. Everything points to the crankshaft sensor that sits in the rear of the block & picks up from the edge of the flywheel. It looks to me like a Halls unit that generates a pulse for the ign. module, rather than a TDC indicator. The part no. is 002 153 26 28. Anybody have any experience of a problem with this unit, what where the symptoms?
