My father has a 98 ML320 overseas and this part went bad on the truck. This part was over $800 dollars out where the truck is so he sent it to me to see if I can help find it. Unfortunately he did not get to tell me what it was, it smells like gas but apparently it's not the fuel pump, every time I do a search for a fuel pump it looks nothing like this.

Take it to your nearest dealer along with year and model and they will indentify it and give you a price then you can shop around.
