Rear end clunk when at a stop light
Hi and thanks in advance for your help.
I recently bought a 2002 E55 AMG with 77K miles. When I am at a stop light with the car in Drive, and my foot on the brake I hear a "thunk" sound coming from the rear of the car, it repeats itself every 10-15 seconds and is pretty consistent. This happens when the car is completley still and not moving.
Is this any issue of concern?

ML500 AMG pkg
What you are describing sounds like the charcoal canister valve has shut and the vehicle has initiated a test. The thump noise is actually the purge valve pulsing vacum to the fuel tank to check for leaks, if the test is interupted by driving off it will perform the test again at the next stop until it finally completes the test. This test is only performed with fuel levels between 3/4 and 1/4. Hope this helps.

2003 S500, 03 C240, 03 E320, 03 tahoe
same sound on our 03 S-500
if im not mistaken our last E-320 did the same thing, this is normal and nothing to worry about.ours is just a subtle "thump" that you would only notice if the audio system were off and all the windows up,you know what i am refering to is that total "peace and silence" that you get when you are sitting in your MB with all the windows up and nothing is turned on,at a stop light or in traffic, you gotta love these cars.
