acceptable method ? or not.

on my last E-320 i "flushed" the power steering fluid by removing the return line from the resevoir, then removed the serpentine belt and rotated the pump by hand while adding new fluid to the resevoir and waiting to see clear/clean fluid from the disconnected return line that is placed in a bucket.reinstall the line and top off to correct level.Im about to use this same method on our S-500.is this ok?

I would agree that it is a good method. You leave some fluid in the lines to the rack, etc., but arguably a very small amount in relation to what you are flushing. I like the method.

What we do at the place I work is suck out the old fluid from the reservior, top it off with new, start the engine and crank the wheels back and forth a few times shut it off, then repeat until clean. This way gets the old fluid out of the rack and lines, kind of time consuming, but it does clean it out.

so far so good

sounds like it's going to be a ok method,i didnt realize you had to turn the wheel to purge the rack/pinion,hopfully only a small amount of fluid is not being flushed.the reason i like to turn the pump manually is if i pull any air into the pump it wont aerate the fluid and create that groaning nightmare which iv'e heard is tough on the pump.
