Exclamation Mobil 1 Engine Oil

MB recommends Mobil 1 10W-40 oil for year round use in North Carolina, I can't find Mobile 1 10W-40 anywhere. Is it ok to mix Mobil 1 5W 30 with 15W- 50 to equal 10W-40

Why not get the dealer to top the oil up for free? That's what we did at 10,000 km. Presumably they have the correct viscosity.

The different viscosities are indeed miscable but by adding a low-vis one to a high vis one does not necessarily result in a medium vis oil. Modern oils have some pretty funky chemistry. In a pinch, do it and don't worry.

...You can go with Castrol Syntec 5w-50, which is on the approved oils list for MB synthetics. That's what we use in all of our cars, with 100F summers and mild winters [rarely below freezing here].

If MB recommends it the dealer will stock it, and with Mobil 1 you going to pay about the say for it everywhere (save, Cosco, Sam's Club ect.) But given the infrequent changes due to FSS I don't think the cost of getting it from a dealer will be that much more.

Syntec 5w-50 is awesome. I know the awesome PTG V8 M3 Racer uses it.

Why are you pulling up years-old posts all over this board to hype Syntec?

I am not the only person who is hyping Syntec, I am just agreeing with the other posters. Do you really care or do you have a problem with me? I "hype" Mobil products too. It just seems there are huge deficientcies here in the knowledge base for an enthusiast German car site. Some here seem to consider my posts helpfull, you don't?

If you guys have a stand-up persopn who wants to discuss MB oiling requirements in-depth, that would be cool. Otherwise I apologise for the lecturing tone.

15w-40 dino, great in warm climates
5w-40 synth, up to the job
5w-30 SM/GF-4 dino (HC) a cheap alternative that will work fine
0w-40 Mobil 1, prefered choice of dealers and CAFE MPG
0w-30 Syntec (German) da bomb
5w-30 Mobil 1, do not use it is too thin for German cars.

Hmm, I don't remember saying anything about whether it was helpful or me having an issue. If you reread my post (it's pretty short and to the point), I was asking why you were pulling up OLD POSTS all over the board to hype Syntec. I didn't say you don't hype Mobil, I didn't say I have a problem, I just asked a question (which incidentally, you've not answered).

I am not having an issue about what oil you are hyping (I don't care for Mobil myself), but you've already made your point in several relevant threads (which is fine) but why do you have to dredge up old posts that haven't been alive for literally years and bring them back? Anyone searching for this information will get the newer posts first, so you can rest assured that your hype will be well represented even in search results.

I can disagree with the rest of your points, but that's not what I was doing. Heaven forbid I disagree with you and you think I don't like you!

Oh, ok. So I have to consider the age of posts before I respond? I still get EM and PM from people who see my "old" posts and have a question. It happens weekly. It just happened here, so I decided to freshen up the posts here that had a lot of views. Apparently, some people quietly use the search feature and read old posts for info rather than post every thought that comes into their head. The oil advice is what I can offer the Forum, what I came here to get is repair info for my Dad's car. "Can I use .$99c dino oil or 5w-30 Mobil 1?" Shure.

No it isn't OK to mix different viscosities. Only in a pinch. And, No it isn't OK to use Mobil 1, it's garbage. Use Amsoil, and the correct viscosity, 10-40.

I've been using Amsoil for years after having lost an engine to Mobil 1. I truly believe that with Amsoil you will never have an engine "metal" problem.

Check them out at amsoil.com

I dunno of I would call M1 junk. I saw a UOA from a Cayenne Turbo with 19k on the original fill of 0w-40. The results looked very good. The problem is using the wrong Mobil 1. The 30 weight M1 is about the thinnest 30 weight on the market.

PS, that whnet list is very out-dated and most oils there are n/a in USA. Many oils are missing too. If you use the M1 0w-40 you will have nearly the best oil in the World.
