W140 600SEL
importing a 600SEL

We are importing a 93 600SEL, euro model. Has an EPA metal sticker on passenger side engine compartment, near windshield. Our rude&unfriendly importer in Florida having problems recognizing the label as EPA compliant. All other DOT conversions done. Need help in who to talk to or if others have experience in importing a German made Benz. thanks in advance.

Hi,
do you have still have the German documents of the car? In the so called KFZ-Schein or KFZ-Brief (that's the German title) you can tell which class of environmental protection the car had according the German legislation. There are some classes which have 100% equivalents according the EPA classifications(specs. If those would match it might be possible to get the car through the EPA procedure. I'm not aware of the label you were talking about on the passenger side, and I'm not sure this may relate to EPA specs.
Unfortunately the MB dealers in Germany and the USA as well are not very cooperative in that matters at all. I once tried this and all I received from the German MB guys was a dealer list of the area I was living in the US and the advice to buy a new car ther rather importing a car from the Homeland of MB. :-(

Good luck!! You are in for a long and difficult proceedure where the outcome may be not accepting the vehicle in the US. And, it will be expensive. Why on earth did you go this route when its so much easier to find an acceptable car here thats ready to go. In the long run you will not save any money and will likely cost you much more. In addition, many parts are not avaiable from US sources. Don't you remember all the Gray Market car problems in the 80's?? When you do sell it you will take another shot as its worth lots less here than a US Model no matter what you do to it
