how does ASR really work?

Yesterday apparently my ASR activated in the wet (blink blink) but all the while the wheels were still spinning like crazy so it didn't actually stop the wheelspin which I thought it would have. So it got me thinking... (yeah ok ok) how exactly is ASR working?

Is it controlling throttle and brakes or just brakes (or something else?) Is it a "staged" process e.g. Stage 1 back off the throttle; Stage 2 start applying brakes

Just interested to know what it's doing as I was quite surprised that I really didn't feel it although the light was on. But not sure what I should feel as this is the first vehicle I've owned with any ASR "feature"
TIA!

I think the brakes come on first then it backs off the gas.

ASR is only applying the brakes individually, also applying Anti-lock-Brake sequence, which requires the 4-channel ABS-system. If the pedal is still hit during the ASR is engaged, the engine will eventually stall.
