08 with alot of grime?! I just hosed my 08 E63 with the garden hose then washed it with mitten, I did not cover anything. If its too dirty, try getting some engine bright cleaner spray, wait a few minutes and hose it again. I washed my engine because the used car dealer sprayed some shinny stuff I did not like, probably the same stuff on your car left to accumilate dirt and dust for too long.

Oh yeah, make sure to start the engine and drive around to dry off the water when done.

Do not hose your engine down. I have had many clients do this to end up frying electronics in their vehicle. Do it properly and have it steam cleaned.

I dunno, I've heard both sides of the argument. Caution must be used.

Atsobe, how dirty could the engine compartment be on a 1yr old car in Florida Are you leaking something that is attracting a ton of dirt.

I clean our daily drivers once or twice a year. The engine compartment can have quite a bit of salt residue following a long winter season. It bugs me to leave it there.

I mist a light APC on the entire compartment and underside of the hood and let dwell for 5 mins or so. I then use a pressure washer held at a distance to rinse down. The pressure washer moves a fraction of the water a garden hose does. I rinse thoroughly, blow off with compressed air and then towel dry any remaining pools. I make it a point to dress rubber components with an appropriate product. I leave the hood open for a couple of hours to dry. I'll start the car and let it run for 5 mins or so to make sure there are no issues. That's it.

Enjoy.

As long as the engine is cold, and the electronics are covered, you're good to go.
