Engine dies while sitting at a stoplight!

Hello,
I have a 2000 E430 with 105000 miles on it. A month or so ago I noticed that the engine stopped while sitting at a stoplight, now it is getting to be a weekly thing. It would start right away at first but now it want to wait a few seconds before it restarts. What would cause this to happen?
Also the fuel pump is getting rather noisy, is this something to worry about?

Thanks,
Ed

Sounds like a good place to start.

If the fuel filter hasn't been changed give it a try. If the fuel pump quiets down after the filter change it's a good sign.

Classic failed crankshaft position sensor failure symptom.

True, but when it heats up it usually takes awhile for it to cool off enough to allow the car to restart.

Any M112 or M113 engine in any model ought to have the CPS replaced as a matter of course. I noted it's "a" symptom and not the "only" symptom and it's unlikely the failures all produce the same behaviour.
