HELP, 1991 mercedes 350SDL Overheating
I took the car to mechanic because the Heat wasn't working. First they changed the thermostat, that didn’t do it. Than they put a new radiator, cause the old one was found to be clogged. It still didn't work. The cooling system builds a lot of pressure and overheating. they temporary disconnected the hose that goes out of or into the heater core, and for a moment there was heat flow, I guess because they let air out. but when it was reconnected, and I started driving, the heat shut down, and the engine overheat again, with huge pressure in the cooling system.

I had overheating problem sometime ago (the cause may be different from yours), the mechanics were unable to detect the cause after changing sensor etc. I later found out that the fan, not the engine fan but the air conditioner fan right behind the grill will not turn on. It usually comes on with the heater or AC turned on. I noticed it because I stopped and opened the hood when the temperature was high. A change of the fan motor resolved my problem. Good luck

How did they determine the engine was cracked? I would think it's hard to tell a blown head gasket from a cracked block just from diagnostics. Either way, though, the head will have to come off. I'm thinking that you shouldn't resolve yourself to needing a new engine just yet. Hopefully, they were only quoting you the worst case scenario.
