Help, 03 E500 has a fuel problem

Hey guys, my cousin bought a E500 from a fellow member here a few months ago. It has a problem of reading the capacity of fuel (gas). Sometimes it will show empty but the car will have full tank of gas, sometimes it will show full gas tank but it will be half empty. Its very annoying because range meter also does not work. Is there anybody local to NJ, NY, PA, CT that can work on this problem for cheap? I got a quote of $1k with parts and labor from an independant mercedes mechanic.

My corvette did the same thing when Exxon sold fuel with high sulphur that plated out on the fuel sensor. I found that if you use Shell Techron it will clean the sensor. But read the instructions and use it at the highest allowable level. Also this is one of the few additives approved for MB.

If you note that some fuels come with techron already in the fuel,, perhaps this is why it is approved.

Try it won't hurt, might help.

Let me know how it works out.

Note if you haven't changed the fuel filter it is in the tank attached to the level sending unit. You might be due for a change and can have the fuel sending unit replaced with the filter.

IIRC, the fuel pump (on the passenger side) also has a level sensor as the tanks have a pair of wells on them with a connected passageway. There's also marks on both the fuel filter and pump tank openings that need to be aligned with marks on the filter & pump.

Regards,
paul...
