Question MPG question

I have a 92 300E 4matic. I'm getting consistine 13 mpg city/17 mpg Hwy. The manual says 17 city/20 hwy, what could be wrong?

I've check the tire pressure and had a tune up. Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Alan

Alan, does the phrase "your results may vary" sound familiar? There are countless variables for fuel efficiency that have nothing to do with the car. Remember too that that the EPA and factory numbers were not "real world" based. Making sure the fuel injectors are clean (Techron) is a good place to start; making sure the transmission is shifting at the right points; carrying any anvils in the trunk? O2 sensor still good? Keeping track of mileage is great since it shows you when something is wrong and affecting milage, but if you're getting consistent results without any noticable performance problems, I think your're okay.

BTW, how do you know you're getting different city vs. hwy milage scores?

MPG Question

Well, I don't usually carry anything or anyone around so that leaves out the weight issue. I usually drive all city or all hwy. Like last weekend I was on a ski trip and got gas on the hwy to start and had to fill up on the hwy again, with no traffic doing about 80 mph and got 17.6 mpg. Driving all city I get no better than 13-14 mpg.

I just can not believe this car gets such bad gas mileage. Its a 4matic understandable, but these are horrible numbers. Here is an example:

I use to own a 1988 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde, 3.0 V6 185hp - GVW 3380 lbs.

17 city/ 28 hwy

I use to beat on this car like you wouldn't believe 5000-6000 rpm shifts all the time and got no worst 15 mpg with AC on city. On the hwy, the faster I went the better MPG I got. On a trip to TN averaging 50-60 mph, 25 MPG. Averaging 100-110 mph, 30 MPG. Doesn't make sense I know, but that's how that car was. I know I've owned 2 of them.

Which brings me back to my question how can a car I drive so civilized get worst MPG than I car I beat on?

Sound's about right slow down to 60-65 MPH and see what you get for MPG. Try this;

Fill up at a gas station near a highway on ramp, don't top off let the pump stop by it self. Now get out on the highway(on a day/night with light or no traffic) and drive with the cruise control set to 60 MPH. drive for about 30 to 45 min turn around and drive back to the same gas station you fill up at and fill up again using the same pump and again don't top off, now see how many gallons it take and see what kind of milage you get.
