I recently purchased a 1988 190e with 124,000 miles with an engine condition.I checked compression and #2 & #4 have no compression while 1 & 3 have 165 lbs. where should I start?

sounds like it's time for a head gasket and vavle/head job should run really nice after that. It's a 2.3 right?

Spray some heavy oil into the combustion chambers with zero compression then do the compression test again.
If there is measurable compression afterwards, at least part of your problem is piston rings.
If the compression rises to more or less normal levels, ALL of your problem is piston rings.
If the compression is still zero, the problem is the valves.
With the head off, check for a lip at the top of the piston ring travel in the bores. If you can feel one with your finger, it's time for a rebore and oversized pistons.
Why'd you buy a dead Benz anyway? Or was it free? The engine repair could cost more than the car is worth, if it needs the full meal deal.
