AC problems 1997

I have a 97 E Class. Evaporator developed a leak two years ago which is getting worse. Dealer said this was common on Florida cars with the weather corroding the aluminum. Any one else have this problem during or after warranty? Any $ help from MB to fix?

If it is a common problem, I would like to gather a bunch of folks with this problem.

Evaporator leak

I've heard of the MB evaporator leaks that cost a fortune to repair and understand MB will only replace the unit. There are several products that address the problem...I don't know how well but have read some glowing remarks about them. Here's one of the products:

Thanks for the lead on Cryogenics. They are not too far away and I will check them out. I am familiar with air cure products and their theory is sound.

And the remark on expensive is right. I was quoted US$2400 to repair by a dealer and independent.

Apparently to access the evaporator the entire dashboard has to be removed. I am concerned about the reassembly and everything working again!

Have you had the car checked by an experienced technician? I have never seen the evaporator on a 210 leak, ever. That's not to say it doesn't happen. The more common problems with 210 A/C are the expansion valve, receiver-drier, and especially the evaporator temperature sensor. You may want to get a second opinion.

Very interesting comment. I will have them checked out. Are the sensor or valve accesible without diassembly of the dashboard?

The expansion valve is on the firewall, just below the wiper assembly. The evap temp sensor is under the dash, and it can be replaced without removing anything at all.
