Can you help? My husband is looking to service our Mercedes that we bought last year. It is due a service B. Do we need any special tools to fit the items for the service or would you sugegest not attempting it ourselves at all.

Hello and Welcome to the forum -

A great many people on these MB enthusiast sites do there own maintenance and repairs. There are lots of procedures usually called DIY's for Do It Yourself.

In many cases you can get by with a minimal amount of tools but some procedures require specialized tools to perform correctly.

Start by finding out just what is needed for a Schedule B service on your car. Check the Owners Manual pack for a 'Maintenance Booklet'. It will have all of the maintenance requirements. If you don't have one, see your dealer or call 1-800-FOR MERCedes. It's either free or a small fee.

For an oil change most of us use some form of suction to remove the oil thru the dipstick tube. This eliminates the need to jack the car up since the oil filter is on top as well. However, you need to purchase a device for that (about $50?). You can still do it the old fashioned way by removing the drain plug in the oil pan.

Generally, coolant changes (every 3 yrs), air filters and cabin filters don't require any tools other than a phillips screwdriver.

Save money on the labor not the fluids and filters. Use MB approved fluids (oil, coolant, etc.) and filters.

For those things you don't want to tackle yourself find a good independent MB mechanic. Ask other MB owners and check with anyone on these sites which lives in your area. Most good independents are about 1/2 way in cost between DIY and the dealer.

Good luck.
