His mama. Traded y0 mama in because she was squeaking.
Either will work.

5 cold points isn't going to hurt anything.

If you live in a colder climate, go with the 0. Warmer, the 5 is fine. But in the grand scheme of things, either weight will be fine.

The 5W-40 oil used at dealerships is specially designed for the diesels, but is OK for gasoline engines, too. It's not the other way around as regards the 0W-40.

Dealers have automatic oil dispensing systems and these can usually only accomodate one type of oil, so the diesel oil it is.

Viscocity ratings are today meaningless. What's important to Mercedes owners is whether 229.5 or 229.51 (diesels) is printed on the bottle.

Final Answer?

I am going to use 5W40 in the 550...Why? I called 4 dealerships and only one was using 0W40...One SA said Mercedes revised thei recommendations a couple of years ago, 5W40 is the new recommendation. Hope this helps...

My dealer in the midwest has just switched to the 5W-40 from the 0W-40. They claim the switch came from new "factory" recommendations. My area ranges from -40f wind chill to +110f heat index.....as long as it's 229.5 specific...and not ESP, thats for diesels.....unless you have a diesel.

Here's the actual MB site for approved fluids where you can check on the 229.5 and 229.51 oils updates. This info was captured in the service sheets that JonMBZ previously posted.
