I would run a 40-weight rather than a 30. 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40 are all suitable. AMSOIL also makes a new Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil that meets MB specs (229.3, 229.5) and we use it in our 2001 CLK430 Cab.

I second Amsoil.

Although I believe 0w-30 should be OK for most driving, especially since Amsoil's 30 weight protection probably exceeds Mobil 1's 40 weight protection. Not to mention that I believe most of my cars used to be changed with Mobil 1 5w-30.

Pretty weird that MB fills the car with 5W-30 from the factory but then goes on to say it isn't recommended any longer.

2004 CLK 320
In Europe there are many brands available off the shelf that are 5w-30's and are 229.3.

I think they are factory filled with 5w-30 because it's readily available and meets specs. Mobil 0w-40 is availble here and meets specs.

In US it's very hard to find 229.3 / 229.5 spec oil other than Mobil 0-40.

The Mobil 0w-40 is a great oil and does meet the newer 229.5 spec, too.

AMSOIL's 5W-40 European Engine Oil also meets 229.3 and the latest 229.5 long drain spec as well.

Cheers,

Amsoil!

AMSOIL would be my choice, Just used the synthetic, gear and ATF fluid for a fluids change on our ML430.

Yay! Boycott Exxon!

There's gotta be a tree hugger or two on here now that MB sells so many cars. Just look at the W203 section.

"All the oil information you need to know is here http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html"

That is an old, out-dated list that covers a lot of oils not available in USA.

Try here:

I use German Syntec 0w-30 from AutoZone.
