E350 Timing Gear Failure

2006 E350 4Matic Wagon - 80k miles, CEL - took to dealer and informed a cam timing gear failure. $1500 kit plus 33 shop hours - Approx $5,700 total. Checking appears to be fairly common as Dealer Technical Bulletin has been issued on problem. Has anyone had this repair done? Also, has anyone ignored and driven - how long before timing gets so bad car will not run or operate?

Any information on success of repair would be appreciated.

You may have the x50 series engines that have a composite timing gear. Mercedes is aware of failure problem and has serial numbers of affected engines. My mercedes dealer found out that some models will not pass emissions inpections even with slight wear. He said engine must come out to replace timing gear on 2006 ML's.

Also, use the forum search to see the posts regarding "2007 S550 engine problems"

As mentioned above it is a very serious repair. On 272 a balance shaft must be replace in order to correct the problem. On 273 its just a cam gear.
I would not ignore this fault, because eventually cam gear will become rounded of and cause timing to jump, causing further damage to the engine.
Have you talked to the dealer about Goodwilling the job?
