Click click tock tock sound... maybe lifters? WITH VIDEO AND SOUND

Hello Everybody.

I recently bought a mercedes c240 2002 used.

Since i bought it i am hearing a clicking or tock tock sound from the motor somewhere.

What i tried doing is changing the oil to high quality stuff that is recommended by MB. That didnt help. Then i tried putting that heavy stuff into the oil that is thick just 1 quart and that helped just a bit maybe, but not much. There was another suggestion to get techron and put it in the gasoline and drive the car and keep the RPM high saying that would fix it. That didnt either.

I dont know what this could be. I assume its a lifter...

I will make a video of it tomorrow and post it here.

Thanks!

Take it to a Benz specialist they can observe it closer and give you an answer. It is pretty difficult for us to tell you what the problem would be if no one is near the vehicle and to hear where sound is coming from.

Thanks.

MB wants $130 an hour just to diagnose it. Unfortunately I don't have that type of money to shell out at the moment . I will take a video today maybe that would help.

Hey guys,

I have made a short video:

It is definitely not the purge valve that is making this sound. Its coming from the left side of the motor if you are looking at the front of the car.

IMHO and trying to be as delicate as possible, if you can't afford the MB diagnostic fee and the problem is a lifter or two, then you certainly won't be able to afford the repair. As envymesukas pointed out, it's tough to diagnose noises if we can't hear them. BTW, your video on YouTube requires a login password which was not provided. As a general rule, clicking from inside the engine is usually lifters; but it could be something else. Perhaps this C240 was on the market for a reason.

If you are *really* desperate, try adding a small container of ‘Mystery Oil’ (that’s the trade name) to the crankcase. This concoction is found at virtually all auto parts stores. Mystery Oil can – in some cases – loosen up a sticky lifter. Personally, I wouldn’t drive the engine hard while the Mystery Oil is in the crankcase and change the oil after about 3,000 miles; the stuff is solvent-based. Not a cure-all and definitely nor recommended by MB, but it has been known to work on older engines.

Cheers,
Jeff

As I hit the 'Send' button, it dawned on me that another source of clicking sounds is the fan belt. I know it sounds weird, but it's true. With the engine off, using a bright colored marker, mark a line across any part of the belt. Start the engine, watch and listen. Does the clicking noise seem in sync with the belt? If so, try changing the belt.

FWIW, my S55 developed a clicking sound, especially when cold. Changed the belt and the engine is quiet as a lamb. Same problem occured to my SL600 a few years back.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hello

I apologize I just made the video public. You can view it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCGdXxi26oU

Buying the parts and replacing them is not the problem and i can afford it. But paying MB 130 an hour to diagnose is crazy.

I definitely think it's one of the lifters. Can anyone show me a picture of how these lifters look? Are they the ones that can be adjusted?

Doesn't sound good to me. The sound is too deep in tone for a lifter; more of a 'clunk' than a 'click'. But then, I'm not that familar with the 240 powerplants.
Cheers,
Jeff

That sounds a bit to loud for it to be the belt it self, Very hard to give you a answer on this one. My local MB specialist charge $85 to check vehicle and if you do job they do not charge you. I never go to MB them selves

I know, old thread. But I found it while doing a search looking for potential problems with a c240 4-matic I was consider flipping. The seller wants double what I'm willing to take as the risk taker, so I'm going to pass on it.

Regarding this thread:

From my professional experience as a body shop owner and flipper, it sounds like a failing lifter tappet / lifter bucket, which means a bad cam. I had to address the same sounding issue with an ML63 that was on one side and clearly a deep, noticeable sound. The cam wore through the valve tappet bucket and it literally looked like a donut with a hole in it. They're not supposed to have holes. Cam was jacked up too. $5500 later I got the problem resolved.

Just thought I'd chime in if anyone happens to find this thread in the future.
