99 Clk 430 Check Engine Light

I have a 99 CLK 430. The check engine had come on a couple of months ago and then gone off on its own after about 3 times of turning the car on and off. It hadn't come back on again until last week when I pumped gas. After leaving the gas station the check engine light came on. I assumed it was the gas cap. After fixing the gas cap the check engine light went off the following day. Now it's been going on and off since then.

Can anyone explain what this might be? Could it still keep reading that gas cap problem somehow? Would it help if I disconnected the battery and reconnected it?

Thanks for any assistance.

it could be a couple of things. it could be an oxygen sensor or a MAS.

The dreaded CEL....

My guess is that your gas cap is not sealing properly. Check the rubber gasket and the pipe surface.

RADIO CODE

Well I went the extreme and disconnected the battery. The check engine light went off but now my radio isn't working. It's asking for the radio code and I don't have the radio code card. I guess the original owner put it in a safe place and forgot to return it with the car to the dealer.

Any ideas on how I can get my radio code? Not having a radio in the car is even worse than seeing my check engine light on.

OUCH that sucks. I think you'll have to go to the dealer to get that taken care of. Anyone else got a suggestion?

The Check Engine light was probably either a loose gas cap or a bad mass airflow sensor. The radio code can be found on Netstar, just ask your dealer to do it for you.

Thanks everybody. Well I got my radio code from my dealer, but my check engine light keeps going on and off now every couple of days. I really think it has something to do with the gas cap and it keeps reading it for some reason. I hate to think that one lousy mistake of putting the gas cap on incorrectly one time is going make the check engine light come on all the time. The car was fine, no problems then one bad trip to a gas station put the gas cap on wrong and now the check engine light won't go away.

Kind of makes me wish I didn't stop to get gas.
