$53 for Sun Roof Lube?
I just called my MB dealer to ask about purchasing lubricant for my sticking sun roof and they want $53.00. The MB part number for the recommended lubricant is 001 989 46 51 for a small supply. After searching this forum and other MB forums, it looks like everyone else pays about $20 – 30ish for the lubricant.
Can someone tell me where else I might look to purchase the 001 989 46 51 sun roof lube?
Thanks,
Russell

Use the proper lubricant
and stay away from things such as white grease.Mercedes has lubricants made for specific applications, and it's best to stick to their reccomendations.Using something else usually leads to trouble that more than offsets the $ saved with generic grease.

"Mercedes has lubricants made for specific applications" What a bunch of FUD. You make it sound like MB makes lubrications to match their mechanical application. Not so. MB picks from available lubricants like any other manufacturer. It is important to use the correct lubricant but MB is NOT a lubrication manufacturer/designer. Just my .02.....$53 for a tube of grease is highway robbery.

I kind of agree. I just noticed that my Mercedes Benz CD changer was made by Alpine. Because I installed an Alpine CD changer into my older 560SEL and noticed the magazine is exactly the same as the MB brand one. Then I looked at the units and comparing them, they are exactly the same except one said Mercedes Benz all over it and charged over double the Alpine unit. Highway robbery sounded right to me.

The price is not right
but the lubricant is.I'd look for a different/cheaper source for the right lube. There's a good chance that your choice of generic grease won't agree with the factory lube. Why risk a gummed-up sunroof?.

The lubricant for $53 is a special silicon grease which sticks very well and stays there for life. I once bought it, since I was of the same opinion white grease wont work. Now I'm stuck with 99.9% of the amount I bought, since you dont need more than a finger tip full for each rail. The smallest amount you can buy is about 1.5 to 2 oz. This will last for ever, and tons of sunroofs. To use it elsewhere is a problem, since only the not painted metal rails can be lubed. As soon as the silicon gets in touch with painted surfaces, you will never ever be able to apply for example touch up paint.

But I don't think this silicon lub will last forever. If it will last forever, why don't MB apply them in the factory before the car reach the consumer and have us complaint to dealer. This will cost more wasn't it?
It might stay forever if no contact between parts. If their is contact, it will wear out eventually and you will need to re-apply it. In addition to the roof parts, you can apply this silicon lub at your rattle/tickling area to eliminate them.
I'm going to try this soon:
