Service Maintenance manuals
Seems there are no service manuals targeted at the DIY crowd. (Haynes, etc.)
How does the WIS (from ebay) compare with the Alldata service and/or the factory disks?
I am looking primarily for info to maintain, repair and maybe do some simple mods to a 2008 GL320.

The WIS is not aimed at DIY, assumes prior MB training.
It is not useful for none standard modification.
It is a tricky install, and if you make a mistake the system must be totally wiped, and windows operating system installed fresh for each attempted install.
As far as I am aware, it will not function on a MAC.
Alldata takes WIS data, and reformats it.

Is Alldata any better for the DIYer, or just less of a computer nightmare?
The two cars I need are about $75 for five years on Alldata, but WIS seems to cover everything for a whole lot less.
What sort of problems do people have installing WIS?
Also, I see it described a few different ways on EBAY. If the date is about the same, is there just one package?
Is this what MB sells?

MB does not sell WIS, it is now a subscription service.
1 - Year Access $2950.00 https://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/subscribe2.jsp
Once installed, and you learn the navigation, my opinion is that WIS is as good.
Alldata has no computer software install nightmare.
WIS covers everything in one package.
Read the DIRECTIONS FIRST.
Follow the install directions with NO deviation.
Most issues are a failure to follow directions or deviation while installing WIS.

Does the WIS on ebay require a subscription, or just run from the database provided with it?
Since my cars are 2007 and 2008, I would guesss there are not many updates I would need anyhow.

Seems $31 is cheap enough to give it a shot.
Heck, if it is a real ***** to install, I can just build a boot disk just for WIS, so I don't have to worry about the configuration of my every day PC.

I had to play with the VM settings a while to get it to run.
Was playing with WIS, but it will take a lot of hunting and searching to figure out how to use it effectively.
The system does not seem very user friendly. I wish I could just get an old fashioned paper manual.
There is a lot to learn, as everything is cross referenced, so you need to know what all the part numbers are just to read a diagram, as there are no other text labels on the diagram.
Oh well.

Can you let me know what settings you used to get it running? I had vm set at win 7 (NOT 64bit) and the screen just flashed between windows is loading files... And the oracle title screen.

I had that also.
I made sure the memory and display settings were in the green (but not too far) and then tried Win7-64, Win7-32 and Win XP 32.
Finally moved back to Win7-64 and it started working.

On the star tech site, can you print the pages you need? I am not sure I'd be able to justify $3k for a few minor instructions. Wonder if they would offer own prices, $3k would be ok if I was running a shop.

I also purchased the WIS dvd set off ebay and wasted days trying to install it. I am not sure if it is the same one but I will tell you my experience which may help some of you. The one I purchased did not mention anything about running in a virtual machine but that is the way it needs to operate. After installing, I tried opening the Oracle virtual machine and got the "windows is loading files...." screen. This stayed like this even overnight and did not change. I then read on the Oracle website that the CPU of your computer requires VT-X to be enabled in the BIOS for the program to function properly. Well, after looking in the BIOS and not finding where to enable it, I did more research on the net and realized my CPU does not have VT-X. If you google "microsoft virtualization detection tool" it will bring you to a link of a program to install on your computer that will tell you if your CPU has VT-X. I then installed it on another computer I had that I could enable VT-X on, the program worked fine. Just remember that since it is running in a virtual machine, it is VERY slow. My program also required around 85gb free space on my HD to install. I hope this helps anyone that had the same problems as I did.
