Have a 03 CLK500 ith 700 miles, check engine light been on 2x, first time besides doing work on it they said factory put in 1 qt. too much oil, 2nd time besides changing coils & wires they say the oil does not look like mobil1 & are changing the oil. I thought all MB comes with mobil1.

From what I understand the factory oil fill is a mixture of Mobil 1 and conventional oil. I was told that this is done to facilitate the engine break in

If that is the case I guess my dealer is not helping by replacing that mixture with all mobil 1.

Early Oil Changes

Back in the 80's with W123 & W201 MB would put in a very thin oil at the factory for break in purposes for diesels. They may have done it for gas also but I don't have any personal knowledge if they did. The first oil change was reccomended at 1,000 miles, and MB would include this fist oil change for free (I think I paid for the filter and possibly also the oil). This first oil change was to a normal weight oil. The second oil change was at 5,000 miles or 4,000 miles later and it may have been covered by MB also.

Based on this previous experience, when the MB dealers now do a fist oil change and use a undiluted synthetic, I would assume it is O.K.

Just picked up the car, they changed the coils, wires, egr, etc. Also did the oil change to mobil 1. Go figure I thought all MB's have mobil 1 from the factory especially since they want you to go 1 year or 10,000+ miles on the oil. Turns out MB ships the cars out with regular oil not mobil1.

No steve, except for the AMG's which come factory filled with Mobil 1, all others (as of 1 year ago, AFAIK) come with a synthetic blend, not dino oil. I was curious also so I called up MB technical Services and they gave me this information. Now, I don't believe that's changed for the MY03 Mercs. I believe every AMG engine is already borken in before shipment.
