OM611 Cylinder Head Removal
I'm a Norwegian marine mechanic, and I come here because google has served me up useful information from this site in the past. While I have experience with most types of marine engines, from 2hp outboards to 100 liter two stroke diesels, I have very limited experience with working on cars. This brings me neatly around to the question at hand:
I'm helping a friend's mom with her 2003 C200 Cdi. It had lost power and stopped by the roadside when I entered the equation. When started, it ran like a total bag of doo-doo, sort of like if you swap around two spark plug wires on a gasoline engine, and would stop after several seconds of running. Cranking it with the injector wires removed quickly revealed that it had low compression on one cylinder (za-za-za-pause-za-za-za-pause-etc). I checked that the timing chain hadn't skipped, and noticed that most of the tappets were stuck, but googling around indicated that that should only result in an annoying rattle.
Thus, I started tearing 'er apart to get at the valves and head gasket to see what's up. Having skinned most of my knuckles, I finally ground to a halt when I got around to the bottom forward bolt that holds the egr tube to the cylinder head. That's when it dawned on me that it might be a good idea to ask for advice.
So, are there any handy tips for getting the head off this car? Any online resources I should be aware of?
Regards,
Henning
