Catalytic Converter failures

Not a MB (Mazda), but maybe someone has info...

After only 50k miles, the Check Engine light came on (it's a '99 Millenia S).

Independant shop diagnosed that the trouble code is for Converter failure. I thought I heard somewhere that the converters had an extended warranty to ensure emissions compliance out to a certain age.
I can't find any info on the net about this. Has anyone heard of this?

Warranty on smog related equipment....

...depends on what state you are in. "Emission Performance and Control" warranty can go up 8 years and 80K miles in California. You have to look in the warranty book to know what is covered and for how long. Sometimes you'll only know when the spedific part is found whether or not it is still under warranty.

Calif is 7/70, 49 states are 8/80.
But one of the loopholes in the Cal 7/70 law is that the car must fail an emission test..... noise is not a failure if it passes a smog check test.

I believe you are misreading it.... look at the inside of the front cover of the Warranty/Emissions booklet. There is a chart and Calif is 7/70. There is also a whole section towards the end that explains it and what is covered.
