ML 320 2000 Starts Then Stops While Driving

My car now has a major problem where it won't stay running for more than 5 minutes. It starts up, then after about 5 minutes, it stops running. When I try to crank it up again, it won't turn over. If I wait 20 minutes, it will then turn over and I'm able to drive for 5 minutes. Then it stops again. Same process.
A mechanic came over and checked the car. He concluded that the fuel pump wasn't working as expected. I bought a new one and he put it in today.
That didn't resolve the issue. He says the spark plug is good and so is the compression.
Can someone please help me diagnose what other possible options it could be?

probably one of the sensors are bad. crank position, etc. a scanner should throw a code.
