2004 Mercedes Benz C Class 220 cdi Aventgarde acts strange when cold
Hi People, I'm Kimi and this is my very first Merc . I'm very happy with it apart from one strange quirk it has. It always starts first time and runs very smooth, changes gear fine, kickdown works fine. BUT when its cold and for the first 3 - 4 miles it seems as if it cannot make it's mind up which gear to choose ! But after that it's fine and GREAT to drive, I'm retired now through ill health but before that I ran / worked in a garage for 40+ years and I've never come accross anything like this before. Any ideas please to solve this will be very welcome. Thanks, Kimi.

I would suggest checking the gearbox oil level first, They are more sensitive to low gearbox oil when cold. If the oil level is ok then I would be looking to check engine fault codes for anything engine running related(gearbox wouldn't throw any codes for this problem) and then is nothing found I would reset the learning/adaptations in the gearbox (most likely will need your mechanic for this one) and see how it drives after a week of relearning.

Thankyou for that BUT there isn't a dipstick for the autobox oil level and whilst I'm on the subject of 'dipsticks' there isn't one for the engine oil either. This is my first Merc but NOT the only automatic I've ever owned. It has what looks like an engine oil dipstick but in fact it's just a red plastic plug that looks like the top of a dipstick ! VERY STRANGE. Where the autobox dipstick should be is a red plastic box and I was told that if I disturb it I have to buy a new plastic pin for it ????? I've never worked on a Merc's mechanics, ( I have rebuilt many Fords, Vauxhalls, Volvos etc but I have resprayed a few of them). All advice and help will be gratefully recieved. Kimi.

Order a dipstick for the gearbox from ebay, search for "722.6 dipstick". They are universal and work for all 5spd gearboxes 1996-end of production. Use the dipstick tube with the lock tap on the cap. Break the lock tab off and remove the cap, check the oil level after at least 15-20mons of driving on a level surface with the engine running. You don't have to replace the lock tab, in a workshop environment we normally would though.

Thankyou for making that clear, can I get a dipstick for the engine oil too, I'm an old fashioned style mechanic and like to check all the levels on a weekly basis, Kimi
Ps. looking at all the Mercs you have you must certainly like them, I haven't had mine very long (about 5 weeks) I'm certainly 100% sold on Mercs for their style performance and level of equiptment ! ! So it's goodbye to all the other now.....

The engine dipstick only has measurements in mm as it's also a universal dipstick. if you send the first 6 digits of your engine number I'll let you know the mm range you need.
