revving any unloaded engine is bad.

unloaded?

Do you mean even revving manual cars while in neutral is bad?

How bad? 5000 miles and you're out bad, or 100000 miles and you're out bad?

yup, dropping the clutch is bad. how long the car will last depends a lot on the engine, tranny, and how high you rev. bc you can blow an engine without going 1 mile. so occasionally doing it, at not more than 2/3 (totally arbitrary based on experience) to redline, will not obliterate your engine any time soon.

Yes, reving any unloaded (in neutral or park or with the clutch in)engine high is a bad thing. How high? It depends on how well the engine is built. The mometum of the rotating assembly changes faster which can cause parts to take their leave of the engine in a most detrimental fashion.

I discovered that my W208 has a rev-limiter that cuts in at 2 different RPMs.

At P or N, it cuts in at about 3000+ (can't remember exactly but definitely way before redline) while at D, it should cut in at about redline. So the potential for engine damage should be minimised.

The rev-limiter got baffled once while I floored the throtle once to overtake. It just held the engine at about 4000 RPM while producing a funny noise and vibration.

How about dropping the clutch at 3000RPM? Is that bad? I did that once by accident because I was a bit rusty at driving a manual. I occasionally rev the engine up to the redline once or twice a week. Is that bad?

well, dropping the clutch will burn it, and eventually wear it out. how much it wears depends on the clutch.

you mean fully dropping it and slamming the gas down? I learned manual about a month ago and I revved it to 3000 and slowly let out the clutch and push the gas down in sync...and damn accord clutches are hard-*** tight. Civics are so much more loose

usually when idle in N or P, it should cut out around 4100-4300 RPM's...just stays there.

when flooring it on the highway...cuts out around 5600RPM's. That's what mine does...i'm assuming its in the ballpark for other MB's (besides AMG's prolly)

fyi, accord clutches (and honda's in general) are the farthest thing from "hard-*** tight" try driving a porsche 993 or any other sports car then see if you still think the honda's clutch feels tight (probably since you just started driving a stick shift) are you having fun??

haha. My friend taught me on his Accord. Still got my 4-speed MB I'll drive his car once in a while when he's over so I can keep up my shiftin' skills, lol.

But yes, it was definately fun shifting. After driving around for a few hours, and then next day back into my car, i was like, awww, no shifting!

Now I know why people like to shift...so much fun!
