Question about fuel level sending unit
Hello. I too now have the fuel sending unit problem (98 CLK320). Unfortunately, car is out of warranty. I'm not sure if the service manager will fix it with goodwill since it's a known problem.
Question: Is the unit simply for convenience (telling me when the gas is low) or will it cause any safety, performance, etc problems?
Thanks in advace.

I believe the fuel sending unit is just to report back to the driver VIA the cluster how much fuel is left inside the tank, but there may be other uses for it.
I know that when our ML fuel gauge was off (when filled, it would only register 3/4's), they replaced the fuel sender unit and all was well again.

This is the only other use I know for these units.
