SRS Light
Last night the SRS light on my dash lit up just as my front seat passenger was exiting the car. It's still on today.
Is there any way to do some basic troubleshooting on the system? Anyone had any experience with this, either good or bad?

For a '99 model you need an ODB-II code reader to retrieve the fault codes from the SRS control unit.
Judging by your story, I'd say there is a problem with the passenger seat belt buckle. There is a switch in the buckle for telling the SRS when the seat belt is being used. If the belt is buckled in, the tensioning restraint will function during a collision. Otherwise it will be deactivated.

Update
The SRS light on the dash goes out as long as there's someone in the passenger seat. Doesn't matter whether they're wearing the seat belt ot not. But as soon as the seat's empty, the light comes back on.

maybe there's a control module underneath the seat? From the pressure of a person sitting down, it may put a loose connection back on-line and when there's not, the wire is loose?
Check for any boxes or wiring underneath and see if everything is tight.

I believe the newer cars sense a person sitting in the seat. This is because not everyone wears their seat belts (even though they should). This is probably why the SRS has a fault when the passenger gets up.
