CEL on sometimes, off sometimes

CEL on sometimes, off sometimes
My car is a 2001 E430. Low milage, about 55k on it now. Recently, my CEL came on, read the codes, and now I am waiting for part to arrive to fix the problem. However, sometimes at the start of the day, the CEL is off, and may stay off for several hours before turning back on. This has happened on numerous occasion and I did not clear the codes. How is it possible for the CEL to go on/off/on numerous times without clearing the codes? Is this a MB thing?
