SRS light on after speaker replacement

Hello all, I have a 2007 CLK63 cabriolet. I pulled off the door panels and replaced the speakers in either door. The airbags for the sides are in the seats not the doors. I had the panels off for a while trying to get the best speaker fit. At some point I decided I was probably running the battery down with the do,e light every time I opened the doors, so I decided to start it.

After I replaced the speakers I put the panels back on and started the car. The SRS light and take to shop messages came on. I don't know if it came on when I started it without the door panels on or not, but I have had the car for a year and never seen the light on before. It's also possible that I may have started it without sitting in the seat which I understand could also cause the light to come on. I have driven the car multiple times hoping it would reset but no luck.

I then took it to my local mechanic and told him what I did. He hooked it up to his computer and tried to clear the code. It wouldn't clear and he said there were over 40 SRS fault codes in the computer and I should go to the dealer.

So today I went to the dealer and they told me the SRS control computer has gone bad and would be $1500 to replace.

Before I spend that I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts or options I could try first. And to top it all of my inspection sticker expires this month and they won't inspect it with the warning light on.

Much appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Josh

I'd try a different shop that can clear the codes. Maybe unplug the ecu for a couple minutes and reconnect. Are you sure you reconnected all the wires and didn't pinch any?

I agree with GLENN S, try disconnecting the battery for an hour and see if it clears, if not you may have to replace the SRS module. I've had to replace mine already. If you did damage a wire you likely fried the module.

I just remembered something. When you had the panels off and wiring disconnected, the can- bus line was interrupted. So the car computer system assumed a break in the wiring loop and started shooting all the codes.

Thank you all for your input. Turns out it was a bad SRS module. No correlation to the door panel removal, just coincidence. My local dealer wanted 1500 to replace. I found a new module online for 620 and a dealer about an hour away that will program it for 125.00.
