What kind of pump is this?
I have a '91 300se. Yesterday I went to start it and I was immediately greeted with a meat grinder noise from the Block. I said a short prayer, and looked to find that a pump on the left side of the engine compartment just above the alternator had finally died.Problem is I don't know exactly what the pump is for, but I think it may be a vacuum pump.
Can anybody identify this pump for me - so I can order a new one?
Here's a photo:

What side of engine compartment?
Most people refer to either Driver's side or Passenger side, when talking about a car. Many people consider the Driver's side (in a US car) to be the Left side of the car. From your pictures, it appears that you are talking about the Passenger side of the engine compartment. Is that correct?
I am not familiar with your engine, but does it have coolant hoses going to the back of it? Could it be your Water Pump?

Is that a radiator hose going to it?

It's the passenger side. It would be the left side if you were standing at the front of the car looking into the engine compartment. I'm in the US.

No the hose in the picture goes over this pump and into the water pump and it not connected to the pump in the picture in any way. The pump in the picture has a small elbow shaped hose maybe an inch and quater in diameter that leads into the back of the unit. The hose runs from the block just below the manifold heat shield. When I squeeze the hose I don't hear any fluid in it, leading me to believe it's a air or vacuum hose of some type.
