Driver's Headrest not working

My '01 E55 driver's headrest is not working. I only heard "click" when I use the switch to adjust it. The dealer told me that I need to replace both the switch and the motor (not really sure why).

I'm just past the basic warranty so I guess I need to pay for this one.

My question:
1. How do I know for sure that I need to replace the switch and/or the motor? Is there anything I could try first?
2. Is it easy to fix it by myself?

Any inputs is greatly appreciated.

Remove the seat back..Screws on the Lower seat back.
Inspect the Gear assy for the headrest...

Try adjusting the seat all the way forward and then all the way back. For some reason this worked on a friends car

So, does it mean it may not be the motor? I finally talked to the mechanic... he said it was not the switch, it was the motor....

But I am not sure he fully inspected it..... as he blamed the switch when the seat could not move forward..... indeed it just needed to be re-sync.

So..... if the next reply could tell me exactly how I check the gear, it'll be great!!! Earlier post explained it very briefly..... more details will be very helpful.

Thanks a bunch!

I am not the best at explaining this but I'll give it a shot.

1. Remove the back seat (earlier post from Mark Cumming)
2. Try to adjust your headrest now, see if the motor is at least moving. Process elimination here, if it's not movingthen the motor is bad.
3. If the motor works, you want to inspect the joins where the headrest is connected to the frame. If it/they are broken, you can you use a 2 tie wraps (for each join) to reconnect them - you have to use some imagination here.
4. If these joins are fine, inpect the plastic part with teeth which contact the motor that may be broken, use a hose clamp to fix it.

Hope this would help
