Replacing steering column W211
I see the steering column/assemble as made from 3 parts.
1. The bottom piece (A -> C) with the U-joint which connects to the steering rack.
2. The middle extension piece (C -> F) , which goes through the foot panel (at D)
3. The steering rack (F -> E).
Question 1.
If I wanted to remove the bottom U-joint piece, how do I disconnect it from the middle piece? Can I reach C from under the car or must I go through the foot area from inside the car? Can I do it without disassembling the middle piece from the top steering column.
Question 2.
Can I remove the steering column (F to E) without removing the cluster?
Question 3.
Is it likely that a locked up U-joint can be the course of heavy steering? They cost peanuts on eBay unlike racks and pumps, so a cheap first elimination. I'll be changing ball joints and tie rods this week too.
