Sun roof issues

Yesterday when opening my sun roof it started to open then about 6 inches into the run it stopped. This happened every 6 inches until the roof was open then at the end of the run it sounds like the cables are slapping the tracks. It will close with no problems.

I think it is the switch or motor. If it needs to be changed how hard is that?

Assuming the cables are still on the pulleys...

With the "noise" you describe, I think you should try manually hand cranking the sunroof FIRST, to feel if the cable is getting jambed in the track (by leaves/sticks) or, maybe it is partially off the pulley. You should find the crank in your glove compartment, and the manual cranking access hole above the map light switches/bulb cover in the ceiling.

If it's OK, then you could try the resynch. You didn't mention your model year and model number, so I'll assume you have a recent (2000 and newer) E or S class.

For these cars, the sunroof switch is in the ceiling near the lights.
It can be pushed forward to close, and rearward to open.
It can also be pushed UP to just tilt the rear of the sunroof open, or pulled DOWN to close the tilted sunroof.

If that describes your car, then here you go.

Close the sunroof all the way. Turn off the engine, and take the key out of the ignitioin. Put the key back into the ignition and turn it to the 2nd postion to give power to the sunroof switch (don't start the car).

Now PUSH AND HOLD the switch UP for 5 seconds. The sunroof should tilt up and stay up, and you might hear a relay make a faint click sound during this time. After the 5 seconds, let go.

Now PULL DOWN AND HOLD the switch down for 5 seconds, which will close the sunroof.

The next step is the one that sets the open window position: Slide the switch to the HALFWAY rearward position, and maintain it there while the window is opening, until the window is positioned to where you usually like it. Assuming you want it to open all the way, then just keep the switch halfway back until it gets near the end of the track. Then let go. You can try giving it another quick push rearward to see how much more room you had left.

Now close the sunroof all the way. Then try doing the one-touch-open feature by sliding the switch all the way rearward and letting go. See if it makes it to the point that you tried to set.
If it didn't work right, start over by closing the sunroof, pushing it up/hold for 5 seconds, pulling down/hold for 5 seconds, and trying to set it again.

When you are done. You can take the key out or try starting the car and checking it again.
